Population and demographics

Nepal is located between India and Tibet with a population of just over 30m. It is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world.

For decades, the country has faced many challenges – a 10-year civil war that ended in 2006, and a devastating earthquake in 2015 that wiped out whole neighborhoods, businesses, and years of progress. To this day, Nepal is still struggling to rebuild what has been lost.

Nepal faces two major geographical challenges that hinder the country’s economic growth. The 1st is that the majority of the land is mountainous making road construction and building infrastructure difficult and expensive. The 2nd is that Nepal is landlocked and having no access to the ocean means that the easy shipment of goods via the sea is not available to them.

Currently, it is estimated that around 200,000 are homeless, and approximately 5m (17.4%) Nepalis are living in, or under, the poverty threshold. Poverty is the primary root cause of human trafficking in Nepal.

Other challenges include:

  • Lack of health care, especially in rural areas where about 75% of the people live.

  • Lack of access to education. There are schools in Nepal, but are unaffordable to the majority and the mainstream public schools are under-resourced and lack quality teaching.

  • Lack of industry and therefore lack of good jobs that also pay well.

  • A prevalent division based on differences in wealth, rank, privilege, race, profession, or occupation.

How we help

Together with our partner and local NGO, “True Light Foundation”, we are working towards finding solutions to some of these challenges by providing;

  • After-school tutoring helps the children with homework, and solving problems. Lessons in English, art, and computer skills are also provided.

  • Visitations to public schools and delivering various programs and activities which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.

  • Vocational training in engineering and other skills.

  • Quality medical attention, including dental and vision.

  • Health and well-being awareness program.

  • Organising fun days for the whole family.
